Emma, my super-worrier, reminds me about this stuff all the time. She needs to practice things like calling 911, getting out of the house, etc, fairly often in order to feel safe. She is constantly figuring things out - like if the fire's at the front of the house, she'll go down the back stairs and into the alley and get help. That's the most recent example.
She does have a list of numbers that she is allowed to call and answer at anytime (minus the 911 number - not an anytime thing). She does freeze before actually talking on the phone, so we practice.
She was right beside me when I called 911 a year ago when John had a seizure while nursing. She remembers that well and was very attentive. Once everything was OK (ambulance on the way, etc), the 911 operator asked to speak to Emma and explained everything that was happening and how important it is to call for help if you need it.
Emma also knows that it's OK to go outside and just YELL if she needs help! She knows to yell something like "My Mommy is hurt and I need a grown up" over and over until someone comes.
Now, John, I'm not so sure how that will go. He's just 3 and we haven't done a lot of training, I admit. But he's so casual and not at all worried that I fear he'll be laid back to a fault.
