The neighborhoods I mentioned--Irvington, Little Flower and Fountain Square are all East of Downtown. In general, the neighborhoods are a little rough, but if you find the right area, you'll be very happy.
We live on a block with 10 other families that go to our church. We've all chosen to move closer to the church (some families already lived here, some moved from elsewhere in the area). I'm not saying you'd have to be part of something like that, of course, but it's something that's made our lives in the "rougher" area not rough at all, yk? Good neighbors make all the difference. We could walk to downtown in about 30 minutes.
If you go out a bit farther east, you hit suburbs pretty quickly.
