Angie,
Back when my oldest was 3 we had a really bad case of lice. Bad because we couldn't get rid of it. We all slept in the same bed so ds and I both had it. For some reason my dh didn't. We figured out that he was the only one who used Selson Blue medicated shampoo. After 2 treatments for both of us with RID we still had the lice.

I have long hair and it was such a pain. Imagine having your dh and mil picking/combing nits our of your hair. Not a great experience for me.
So, I started washing our hair with the Selson Blue medicated shampoo. I did ds's hair every two days and left the shampoo in for 10 min. I did mine everyday. Sure enough, in two weeks they were gone. I didn't get the nits everytime we washed, just about twice a week. My theory is that dh didn't get them because he always had that medicated shampoo on his head.
I don't think it is as safe as the mayo but it is safer than that RID stuff. Yuck. That is why I started using the Selson Blue, I didn't want the harsh chemicals of the RID on ds's head.
Maybe you could just wash her hair with the Selson Blue until the end of the school year. Also, if you braid her hair it can cut down on the spread of them. They really like loose hair. Tell her not to share any piece of clothing with anyone!
