Drink alcohol? Watch mainstream tv? Have close friends who are not religious? Listen to mainstream music? Read books with non religious themes? I am curious just because- no motive behind the question. Just wondering.....

But then, I am right royally terrible. If I were a better person, I would be able to restrain myself. But I'm not. :) I hope someday to be able to control my senses better, but I haven't reached there yet. :badidea:

ETA..Oh..I have to point out, I don't regard having close friends who are not religious as a bad thing. In the slightest. Maybe if they were bad for me, and drag me down, yes, but then, they wouldn't be close, good friends, would they?

Wine is a major part of our religious life - I have a little bit on our Sabbath and holidays. I do not, however, drink otherwise - although there are those who do; I chose not to.
Because I live in a sheltered community most of my friends are from here - I am friends with a number of people who aren't religious or aren't even my religion, but we are not close.
I do not listen to mainstream music with the exception of classical - and that doesn't seem to be mainstream LOL. I made that choice a number of years ago as I don't want my children to listen to it. However, I do listen to the occasional folk music on my classical station on Sat. nights :) .
I do read books that aren't religious- that goes in spurts. I can't afford to feed my reading habit from only Jewish sources - too expensive - the library and 1/2price book store make up the slack.

Alcohol yes, in moderation. I do not get drunk. And we are too cheap to drink alcohol except when someone else buys it. LoL?

TV yes, but I don't watch everything. Some things I personly feek are inappropriate for me, and choose not to watch.

Close friends yes, though my best friends have normally been Christian of some shape or form. But I have lots of friends, and many are not Christian.

Books yes, mostly. I read the Bible and Christian non fiction, but I personally don't like much Christian fiction. It is low on the literary value tp me. I don't read romance at all, either. And I will put down certain books. For example, a book with a major theme of a woman having am affair is just somewhere I don't go. And I don't read chick lit either.

Music I would, but I find my personal tastes lead me to Christian music, but not pop Christian, which annoys me almost as much as mainstream pop. I like what is termed worship, and alternative, and the R&B type Christian. I also listen to jazz and classical.

Not asked, but my podcast listening runs mostly to NPR, and a few Christian.

When I choose Christian over non, it either relates to my own personal tastes or my own personal convictions, not because I have been told to do it.

Drink alcohol? We don't because of my husband being a pastor and our deciding to give it up for the sake of those in our congregation who struggle with alcohol use. I do cook with it extensively, however.

Watch mainstream tv? Absolutely. We do try to be careful of what we watch but we like Survivor, CSI, Undercover Boss, The Mentalist, Numbers, Cold Case - things like that.

Have close friends who are not religious? We have many friends who are not religious but not super close friends. I'd say that I'm definitely closer to those who are Christians just because Christianity is such a huge part of my life that I need to be able to share that with friends. But that doesn't mean that I'm not close to some unsaved friends because I am - but my closest friends are Christians.

Listen to mainstream music? I mostly listen to Christian music but still love my 80s stuff. :) Ramones, B52s, U2, Talking Heads, etc. LOL

Read books with non religious themes? Not quite so much because I don't have a lot of time to read and when I do read, I have a large stack of books that I'm working through. But just for fun, I just read The Long Winter by Laura Ingalls Wilder since we were going through winter time. :)

We do drink but it is very sporadic. Not because I feel that it is against my religion in any way but just because we don't gravitate to it unless in a social situation. We just talked about this on Friday night. In the last 18 months we have bought 2 six packs and been gifted one. When going downstairs to take beer to a friends home, we realized we still have 12 of the 18 bottles left. Our alcohol consumption consists of 1-2 beers plus sharing a couple bottles of wine per year.

On the TV thing, we just don't like TV. Our lives are very full and busy without it and I don't know how we would fit in more than the very occassional movie.

I do have some friends who are not Christian. Not my right to judge someone's religious beliefs. If someone is a good and kind person, I am more than willing for them to be my peep. :)

Shakira is one of my favorite artists as is Janet Jackson, Elton John, and George Michael. I do listen to Christian rock of dh has that station on in the van but I get bored with it easily as there is not enough variety and the same songs get played over and over.

I pretty much exclusively read non-fiction so yes, I read quite a few titles that are not Christian based.

I think people get caught up in doctrine as opposed to actual religion. Didn't Jesus turn water into wine at a wedding? Our church does not approve of dancing yet many people in the bible using dancing as a form of celebration. We tend to not let doctrine get in the way of what we feel are valuable parts of our life experience.

Drink alcohol? we don't drink alcohol

Watch mainstream tv? yes although we do limit certain themes

Have close friends who are not religious? we are in the midst of starting a church that appeals to people who may or may not be Christian, who mostly have little to no religious background and who in general have lots of "issues" that are "messy". So we are around lots of people who aren't necessarily Christian but are "seeking" something. Our closest friends are family and a few others who share our beliefs but most of them are not local to us.

Listen to mainstream music? not often, usually some type of Christian worship music

Read books with non religious themes? I have limited my reading lately for personal reasons. I read a few fiction authors and the rest is non fiction that usually is about topics that interest me (mothering, prayer, grace based parenting, goals and values).

Yes to all but alcohol. But that's not a religious thing. That's a child of an alcoholic thing.

Yes to all of it. I can't imagine not. We lived in a more sheltered narrow community for a few years and I found it very hard and isolating for me. Even then, I was reading mainstream books and what not, but I felt scrutinized for everything I did. One of my neighbors called my People magazine "porn." For me, I need the balance in order to stay true to who I am.

    Drink alcohol- occasionally.

Watch TV- absolutely, but with discretion ;)

Music--I love southern gospel and worship music. That's what I'm usually listening to, but I also love classic rock and some old reggae.

Books- I read a lot, I don't like romances or silly chick lit type books. I don't particularly like many Christian fiction writers. I read a lot of Christian living type books and a lot of best selling fiction. Right now reading "The Help".

Friends - I have a lot of friends from all sorts of backgrounds. My closest friends, though, share my beliefs. It's difficult to share a lot with people who don't share the same ideas, I think. My closest friends that I can tell everything to needs to know where I'm coming from spiritually.
