Thread: Wagons for older kids? Or how to "carry" older kids?

Justin is 4 1/2, and is about 45 pounds....Sarah is almost 6, and is like 55 pounds. Justin especially is not ready to go without anything, like to the park, zoo, etc., but is too big for the stroller, and our wagon? Ugh, it ended up with bent axles due to my heffalump childrens weight. LOL. Is there a good, easy to find/buy wagon for older kids? Anyone with experience with one? I'd like one to carry them both when needed, but at least one for Justin! All the ones I am finding recommend age/weight only up to 4 years old.....sigh.....help? Ideas?

Rememeber those "Radio Flyer" metal wagons from when our generation was kids? Try to find one of those. They can hold a lot. We're starting to run into the same thing with our plastic wagon - dh bent the axle back - but I'm wondering how long it will last. We're going to start keeping an eye out at the flea market for an older metal wagon. I saw one few months back that was big and sturdy and am kicking myself for not getting it then. Also have you thought of kid sized roller skates or rollar blades for your kids - that would make it easier for them to keep up with you. I"ve also seen mamas around here walking while there kids rode tiny bikes with training wheels.

The radio flyer atw is great! I think ours can hold 300-350lbs.

I've been wanting a BobbyBilt one for a longgggg time.
I'm still kicking myself for not grabbing the one I saw at a garage sale when ds was a babe (we didn't have the funds at the time but stilllllll)

Ohhh....now those look nice!!!! LOL. But at garage sale prices, not those ones.....LOL. I am sure they are so worth it, but when I ain't got the money, I want 'em cheaper!!!! LOL.

The Radio Flyer ATW....I read on Toysrus.com that it's only for up to age 4......)o: Where did you read 450 pounds at????? Cause if that's the case, I wonder if my local store carries them!!!! (o:

Whoops, the one we have holds up to 250lbs. Tons more than we would ever need.

The SUW holds up to 350lbs if you need more though.

Just wanted to say too...DD is 4 and loves her wagon. She has plenty of room (we can fit her and 2 friends in it) so I think the 4 yrs thing may just be a recommendation. Just for kicks, I pulled my sister around last summer. (she fit! lol!)

LOL, you think so? I actually think my son is thin, at 45 pounds. He is in the 45% for his age....Sarah is in the 80% for her age though.....(o: She is stockier than most of the kids, girls, in her class....but she's always been my little "solid" one. LOL. Justin is more lanky and thin.....but yup, 45 pounds. (o: LOL, now I'm gonna be checkin' out others kids of my kids ages.....gee, are my kids too big??? LOL.

Walmart has them for $89.95. That's the ATW version with the wooden slatted body. Great deal!

Also, Toys R Us has an extra deep steel one with ATW for $99. I like this one better than the wooden slatted one. It has some wood slats on the back so kiddos can lean back in it. It's very cute.

I know another mama posted a site last week that has accessories, including a pad for the bottom of wagon that's nylon covered and will make it more comfy to sit in wagon. It was around $11.

Do you know what the link for wagon accessories is?? I am looking for a pad to go in teh bottom and maybe the canvas covered wagon thing too.

We got our wagon at Safeway 2 weeks ago for 40.00. It is identical to the radio flyer ATW with the wooden slats and inflated tires. It is called a red rocket but I am not sure of the company name. You might see if they sell them online. I have found it to be a sturdy and well built wagon so far. Kate

Magoo, I saw that one! It was cute! But dh went down and looked at the axles and found them to be like the plastic wagons, with weak axles.....that's not an issue for kids under 40 pounds, but with 2 kids totalling like 100 pounds all together, sigh, we needed something with reinforced axles and all terrain inflatable tires, etc. I could not get over that $39.99 cost though! Great deal! But not really made for older kids, unfortunetely.....)o:

Thanks for letting me know Denise! I still have 2 little ones so this won't be an issue for awhile, maybe by then I can come up with a way to fix the axles to make it sturdier...... Does radio flyer sell parts? I wonder if the axles would be compatible and I could switch them out in a few years. Who knows, by then I may not need it LOL Kate
