art project for proverbs
Hi,
I rather suddenly had to take over a class of upper elementary aged girls. We're studying proverbs, and I have them keeping a wisdom journal. Each week they have a verse to write and decorate the page, or a lesson to illustrate in their folder. Our focus is on wisdom and how to cultivate it in ourselves. So far that's going great.
But i have a couple in there that's are more active, and have a harder time focusing on what we're doing. I thought maybe some sort of on going art project would be good for them. SOmething they can get up and go do towards the end of class when I loose them.
Any ideas for some sort of project that could last for an whole quarter and is related to our study?

Re: art project for proverbs
I don't really have a long-term project idea, but I've worked with that age group of girls on a project (craft) time and I know what you mean about "losing" them.
Just another idea... if our project didn't take long enough, or when some of the girls who just really aren't into crafty/journaling things started getting antsy... we'd get a game going. Like those mixer kind of games that you don't need any supplies (telephone, ...) or charades, or just bring a couple of board games (Apples to Apples, WhoNu, ...) Not sure if you have time for that, but just an idea.
I'll try to brainstorm project ideas with a Proverbs theme.

Re: art project for proverbs
I've been thinking about this some - although I've had a lot on my mind... What about having those kids research King Solomon. See what they can dig up about him. Have them step into his shoes - what was life like for him - or in general, back then... Have them try out being King Solomon: what proverbs would they come up with: could they make their own. Why do they think his are so deep and lasting - (ignoring the obvious that they are from the Bible). Is there one proverb that stands out for them more than the others? why? How do they relate to it?
A few ideas, anyway...

What other books did King Solomon write? do they see similarities between any of them? Compare and contrast Ecclesiastes with the Song of Songs...
Here's a link run by someone teaching Proverbs to 11th graders - the link does have a fair amount of Hebrew in it... Chavlei Shlomo: 1:1 - The Authorship of Mishlei
Examine the time period when King Solomon lived and make your own art project that would be similar to art at that time.

Re: art project for proverbs
What about having them think of ways they can/should use the proverbs in today's world? How others should or do use them today?
It could be for extra credit or something...?Wannabe SAHM w/Emphysema - DOB 06-30-69
